Other Helpful Tips for Moonshots

1. Use a tripod. This will give a steadier, less blurry image. 
2. On an iPhone, switch off flash and switch on High Dynamic Range (HDR).
3. Slow the shutter speed. Many smart phones will automatically go into low-light or night mode when you point them at a dark sky.
4. Reduce ISO to 100. Higher ISO is brighter, but can create a washed-out moon with less detail.

In 2005, Amazon bought CreateSpace, a self-publishing service that enables you to upload, distribute and print your own books. The service has been re-branded Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), and the software is greatly improved: format your word-processed document to the size of your book, save it as a PDF, and upload the PDF to KDP. 

KDP will sell your book on Amazon, make it available on the Kindle eBook, and even enable distributors and bookstores to buy your book. Stores are unlikely to stock your book, but your friends can buy your book online or special-order through stores, and you can buy single copies from KDP for dollars each – rather than paying for 1000 books upfront from the typical memoir publisher.

The most important element of a good story is drama: that is, the reader wonders how the story will turn out. Because most amateur memoirs have little drama, they often go unread. The typical memoir theme is: I overcame every difficulty to become the successful person I am today. The truth about most of our lives is that we are buffeted by winds we cannot control, we nearly drown, we struggle, we are rescued, and we are happy we survived – and sometimes thrived. Our actual drama is more satisfying than the myth we tell ourselves. If you want your family to read your memoir, capture the drama. Be self-effacing, funny, and surprising.

It’s been a tough week for Facebook, which had a six-hour outage last Monday and a whistleblower testifying in Congress this week. Almost no one has ever made a friend on Facebook, but the service is a good blogging site. I use Facebook to record interesting experiences that I would probably forget in the long run. Sometimes, my friends give me feedback; sometimes, they pay little attention, but these experiences are not lost to time.

NFTs or “non-fungible tokens” are a popular new way of selling art or photos. NFTs are tracked on the Ethereum blockchain, and enable someone to buy and own the original copy. Oddly, you can buy the original, but the digital copies are the same quality. If you are a photographer, it is good to know that NFTs also enable you to collect a fee each time the item sells. You can also retain the copyright and reproduction rights, just like with physical artwork, but you would need to stipulate that in the sale agreement.

How to send a fax from dotphoto

1. Create a secure dotphoto album by tapping Organize / Create Album, and then add a password to the album.
2. Take a photo of the document with your camera phone, and upload it to your secure dotphoto album. 
3. Copy the image link in dotphoto, and paste it into FaxZero.com, an online faxing service.

The aspect ratio is the longest side of your photo divided by the shortest side. If the aspect ratio of your image matches the aspect ratio of your print, then no cropping is required: you get the entire image on the entire print because the image shape projects directly onto the print shape.

For instance, many cameras capture an aspect ratio of 4:3, which is 4/3 or 1.33. That’s the same ratio as two dotphoto poster sizes: 40×30 and 24×18. dotphoto also offers a 4xD – the “digital print” (4xD) – that is 5.33″x4″, or an aspect ratio of 1.33.

Upload to dotphoto. In an album, tap on Organize, then Edit Titles. You’ll see the width and height of your photos in pixels. Divide the longest side by the shortest side to find the aspect ratio. In the illustration here, the aspect ratio is 1.33, which perfectly matches the 4″xD print. If the aspect ratio were 1.5, it would match 4″x6″ prints (6/4=1.5).

One of the open secrets of digital photography is that – despite our commitment to our “precious memories” – most of us have flimsy strategies for protecting them. I own two broken terabyte drives, and I have tapes, discs, diskettes and cartridges that are questionable. Like 35mm films, players are rare even now.

1. Cloud Backup

What about a “free” service? Besides the problem of routine downsizing and distracting advertising, formerly free services are changing. 2. Personal Off-Site Storage
At dotphoto, you control your photos. Club and paid plan members can download and backup photos at any time. Simply enter an album, click on Organize and choose Download. We encourage you to keep a copy of your favorite photos in a bank deposit box, fire-proof safe or other secure place. You can create backups yourself, or use dotphoto’s SD Card Service to create an account backup. We recommend SD cards because they are used in most phones and cameras.

3. Print
Print remains one of the easiest ways to backup photos and convey meaning to the next generation. 4×6 prints and photo books are the most popular and inexpensive print backup tools. In addition to the pictures themselves, you may want to annotate the photo titles so that family members can understand the photos in the future. Our high-resolution photos uploaded to Facebook automatically downsize to about 100KB or less. These photos, when viewed on Facebook, appear to be of excellent quality. However, when you compare them to the original picture, you can see the difference. If you download photos from Facebook later, you will receive rather small, lower resolution images that will not produce excellent prints.

Let’s say that you want to take a wide photo and divide it into three standard-sized 24″ x 36″ inch panels to create something like this train bridge over a river for your wall.

You may start with a panoramic image like this:

Before you upload the three images to dotphoto, you may want to “slice” your panoramic into images that will provide room to wrap around the frame, which is 1.5″ deep with another .75″ tacked on the back of the frame. That is, the photo wraps around about 2.25″.

The longest side of a dotphoto image can be 6000 pixels, so you would want the vertical side to be 6000 pixels, which must cover 36″ tall plus 2.25″ wrap at the top and bottom, for a total of 40.5″. The dots per inch (DPI), then, will be 6000/40.5 or 148 dpi.  Set the total width of the image you will “slice up” to (24″ x 3 panels) + (2.25″ x 2  wrap on each side of the three panels) or 72″ + 4.5″ = 76.5″ X 148 dpi for a total of 11,333 dots wide. The internal wrap areas don’t add into the width total because they will overlap.

Once the image is the correct width, you can cut it into three pieces for the right, left, and middle. Each piece is 6000 tall by 4222 pixels wide. Upload the images and create  your 36″ x 24″ vertical canvas wraps like this:

Standard-sized canvases like 20 x 30 and 24 x 36 are the least expensive ways to produce a triptych, but dotphoto also offers custom-sized canvases up to 44″ in our custom frame store. Memorial Day will be different for me this year. I happened to be in Washington, D.C. on Friday, and saw a new memorial along the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Remembering Our Fallen was inspired by a 2010 newspaper story about a father whose grief was even greater four years after his son had died in Iraq because he felt his son had been forgotten, and the war was not even over.

The happy faces of the fallen — most of them in their teens and twenties — shine with youth and promise in this powerful memorial. One cannot help but reflect upon the grief of thousands of families who have suffered and continue to suffer. I will be thinking of them this Memorial Day.

Facebook shrinks your photos, but it does one thing extremely well: Facebook makes it easy to get feedback from your friends. You can Like and Reply to comments, and it’s fun to get feedback on photos. It feels like appreciation.

You can comment only to your dotphoto guests, or you can share directly to your Facebook account and collect comments in both places. Just scroll to the bottom of any dotphoto to add a comment or post directly to Facebook.

Where are my Android photos?

Android devices can keep photos in many different places, so we’ve created this illustrated FAQ to help find Android photos. A few simple tricks are very useful.

Where are my Android photos?

To set up your logo, email your logo as an attachment to prologos@dotphoto.com  Logos should be oblong and horizontal, and up to 1031 x 286 pixels.

To remove red-eye on dotphoto, go to the dotphoto editor by choosing a photo and then tapping the pencil icon. Then choose the red-eye feature, select the eyes and apply.

• Create a Documents album in your dotphoto account under Organize.
• Add a guest password, so that album is locked and will not appear to your photo-browsing guests.
• When you get a document that you want to keep, take a photo of it with your phone.
• Run dotphoto.com on your phone, and upload the document to your Documents album.

Now you can access documents whenever you want, and even download full-sized copies of your documents.  To name your documents, enter the album, and use dotphoto’s Organize / Edit Titles function.

1. To view and share slideshows, click on any photo.
2. When viewing a photo, there is an icon menu in the upper right.
3. The second icon from the left is the sharing icon.
   
4. The third icon with the right arrow is the slideshow icon.
   

Viewing a Slideshow

Click or tap the slideshow icon.  The show will start from the first photo in your album and play through to the end at the speed in seconds in the lower left corner of the show. The default rate is 3 seconds per slide, but you can increase or decrease the number of seconds with the +/- keys.

Control the slideshow using the controls around the sides:

1. To close the show and return to the album’s photos, click X in the upper-left corner.
2. Change the speed of the slide show by clicking the plus or minus keys in the lower-left corner.
3. To move faster than the default rate, click the forward and back arrows on the right and left.
4. To pause or re-start the show, click in the lower right corner.

We don’t have the expensive graphic departments — or the expensive prices — of some competitors, but, if you design your own card or want dotphoto to make a particular design, we’ll do it. The best way to ensure color satisfaction is (1) calibrate your monitor to the sRGB standard (2) if you are pre-processing images in Adobe Photoshop or other editing software, use the sRGB standard that will align with dotphoto’s printers, and (3) trust your eyes. While dotphoto and other editing software provide automatic tools that are meant to help improve colors, your own eyes are the best judge of what you prefer. We at dotphoto do our best to provide a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) experience, but we all see a little differently. If you have calibrated your screen and you don’t like what you are seeing, don’t print until you have modified your images to suit your own taste.

Sizing your panorama
Panoramas tend to be large photos because your camera is really taking multiple images and stitching them together. Fortunately, dotphoto uploads up to a 20MB image, which accommodates most panoramas.

dotphoto posters are so inexpensive that the most economical way to print a panorama is simply to print it un-cropped on a poster. Our custom framing shop also offers prints, laminated prints, canvas and frames in any aspect ratio that you would like — that is, your photo is not limited to traditional print sizes like 12×18 or 20×30. It could be, for instance, 28×42 like the waterfall shown here.

To place more than one of the same product in the cart, you can use a different photo or slightly crop and save-as-new the same photo.

We often allude to the “ground shifting beneath our feet,” but the idea that one can simply disappear while sleeping is so disturbing that I wondered if anyone had ever made a horror movie about sinkholes. Only one, it turns out: “Sinkhole” was filmed in Centralia, Pennsylvania, a city that has been burning since 1962 when a dump fire ignited a coal seam. Centralia is an interesting parable about how government works: the town fathers didn’t want to spend the money putting out the fire, so it spread; then the state government deferred; then the federal government decided that it would cost billions of dollars to extinguish, and experts were not even certain they could put out the fire. Centralia was abandoned. The ground still smokes today.

The Atlantic Monthly has assembled this exquisite photo essay of the leading sinkholes on the planet. The deepest — at 1325 feet — is the Hranice Abyss in the Czech Republic.

Visiting Mom last week, I noticed that she often searches for certain phone numbers, so we created the dotphoto Memo Magnet– a 3.5” x 5” vertical frig magnet that has room for a photo at the top and a lot of text below. A second version has a header like the one pictured here. By the way, this quote is often attributed to Emerson, but was written by Bessie Anderson Stanley in 1904.

A friend returning from a humanitarian mission shared these photos, and said she was relieved to have escaped. Beside the raw authenticity of these cell phone images, they are interesting because The Washington Post reported that “At one point they attempted to set a gas station on fire but were held off by police.” However, one of these photos shows a gas pump burning at a Haitian gas station.

We added a border to the famous painting “Young Man at His Window,” set the ratio to 33/42, and used the dotphoto Custom Frame Shop to print. You can make laminated posters, canvases or framed prints in any ratio.

The most important part of an iPhone upload is lightly dragging your finger across multiple photos to select them. Pressing too hard will not select the photos, but tapping the first one, and lightly dragging your finger works well when selecting more than one photo.
