This photo shows Night Watchman conducting tour through the streets of the walled city of Rothenburg, Germany.
We landed in Frankfort, Germany, where we boarded the bus and drove on the autobahn to Rothenburg for our first stop on the tour. The ancient walled city has been mostly preserved. Many of those on our tour gathered at 8 pm for the Night Watchman's tour of the city.
We continued the next day toward Coburg, the site of the Bauersachs Family Reunion. You will see a couple pictures of the reunion banquet with over 100 family attending from US and Germany.
On Saturday, we rode the bus to Sonneberg to visit the toy museum. Then we had lunch at the Lutherhaus after a wet walk in the rain up the HILL to the Lutherhaus Restaurant. In the afternoon, we took a tour of the Veste Coburg - Coburg Fortress/Castle.
On Sunday morning, we had an excursion to nearby Judenbach where we attended a 10 am worship service at St. Nikolas Church. Afterwards, we had lunch at the Forsthaus. We were delayed on our return to Coburg as the bus broke down in the rain. Fortunately, the bus was repaired and we were on our way. "Bravo!" to the Pastor's wife who brought a clean, dry shirt for the bus driver!
The next day we were on the road heading south to Munich. Once we checked into our hotel, many of us went exploring or took a walk to see the Glockenspiel, the famed mechanical clock. (The clock was under repair so we didn't get to see all the animation and hear the music.) In the evening, most of the group went to dinner at the renowned Hofbrauhaus (the best known of Munich's many beer halls).
After a long day of driving south via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we crossed the border into Austria and continued driving into Switzerland where we had marvelous views of the many mountains, some with snow-capped peaks. St. Moritz is our home for the night. We enjoyed breathtaking views of the lake and the village of St. Moritz as we arrived at our destination. The evening was too short and the shops closed way too early, but we were able to get a few souvenirs before grabbing a bite to eat for dinner.
Wednesday we spent most of the day on the Glacier Express train through the Alps all the way from St. Moritz to Zermatt. There were many breathtaking views and many tunnels along the railway. (Some spots we were up so high and the cliff was so close, that I feared to look down.) It was getting late when we arrived in Zermatt but we did catch a view of the Matterhorn Mountain with its snow-capped peak.
Leaving Zermatt, we took the train to Tasch where we boarded our bus to drive northward through Switzerland and on to Schaffhausen. We stopped here to see the mighty Rhine Falls - the most powerful waterfall in Europe. We continued onto Freiburg where most everything revolves around its Gothic Munster (Cathedral).
Friday, we took a detour into France across the Rhine River to Strasbourg. We had a walking tour to the marvelous red sandstone Cathedral and a tour of the "Petite France" section of Strasbourg. In the afternoon we took a short trip to the Alsatian Wine Route to enjoy a wine tasting.
In the morning a short drive took us to Weingarten, Germany, the birthplace of Paulus Bauersachs. Then, it is on to Heidelburg for a walking tour of the Heidelberg Castle which lies on the banks of the Neckar River. We also visited the Holy Ghost church in the old town and found time for lunch.
Our last full day in Europe included the Rhine River Cruise. We saw many picturesque villages and vineyard-clad hills as well as the ruins of several feudal castles. We enjoyed a stop along the Rhine at Rudesheim for shopping and dinner. (I had the most delicious meal here and my first dessert -- apple strudel and an iced coffee which included ice cream and whipped cream on top! :)
auf Wiedersehen!
