We got a new (new to us - April 2002) Caique (pronounced Ki-Eek) - which we consider a rescue. The
original owner - a very nice little lady bought this guy (he is a dna sexed
male) in 2000. About a year ago she was trying to trim his wings and one of his toenails got caught in her wedding ring. He panicked and bit the heck out of her. She was too frightened to hold him anymore and he has been confined to his small cage ever since. A very nice lady that is
on several lists that I too am on decided to buy him and find a good home.
She picked us - she decided that Betty and I needed another challenge.
We finally decided to name him Joseph (for his coat of many colors). He is a
Black Headed Caique. Here you will see pictures of Handsome Joseph. He was not too friendly when we first brought him home. We were concerned about him biting at first. He escaped when we tried to transfer him from the travel cage to his new home. We didn't want to grab him because he had a bad experience when he was caught earlier in the day and put in the travel cage. We didn't want to frighten him so we just tried to let him walk out of the travel cage into his new home. He got scared and took off. I followed him slowly and carefully and finally trapped him in a corner and actually got him to step up on my hand - and no biting. That was a good start on a new relationship. I was so delighted that he would step up without any
biting - he was frightened, but cooperative.
Isn't he a handsome fellow? Click on a photo to enlarge it. |
