Kosnac Floating Derrick Co. was founded in the early 1950s by Capt. Fred Kosnac Jr., continuing a family-operated maritime businesses founded by his father, Fred Kosnac Sr., in the late 1920s. For the past several years the company has been operated by Fred Kosnac III and sister, Veronica. For decades the family operations have been known and respected on New York Harbor for their ability to provide excellent services and maintaining an outstanding safety record using secondhand or thirdhand single-screw "classic" tugs. The era of single-screw vessels having given way to twin-screw tugs in New York, in compliance with Coast Guard regulations for handling the principal cargoes of New York, the company had its first new build in three generations, and their first twin-screw vessel, the June K., delivered in the summer of 2003. The 1950s-vintage Gotham, the Huntington, and the Margot, for years icons of New York with their bright orange superstructures and white "K" on the stack, have been sold to interests in other locales where their features are appropriate. The June K. is in almost constant operation, having been equipped by Capt. Kosnac with features specifically adapted to the waters of New York Harbor and its tributaries to Albany and beyond. Her fold-back upper house provides the eye-height required for handling large petroleum barges, or the reduced air-draft required for the low bridges over creeks and canals in the New York area. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
