K-Sea Treansportation Partners LP is in a sense the "newest" towing company in New York, the management team of the former Eklof company buying-out their employers in the late 1990s and navigating their firm to its present public position. Shortly after the organization of K-Sea with Eklof's harbor fleet, the company acquired extensive assets of Maritrans, including large ocean-going barge-handling vessels. The company has a reputation for outstanding equipment maintained in excellent condition, and skillful crews who are well looked-after by their employers. In addition to a number of tugboats designed for harbor duties, K-Sea's equipment includes a large number of ocean tugs in ITB (integrated tug/barge) configuration, giving the company the ability to transport large barges offshore and across the ocean, as though they were standard tankers.
