Tugboats nowadays come in many sizes and styles, adapted for a variety of general lines of work. A tug specializing in shipdocking is likely to have numerous characteristics different than tugs specializing in barge-transportation. Some tugs are designed with harbor work in mind, others are intended for coastal and ocean-going duties. Many tugs can undertake more than one line of work, but still are optimized for particular purposes. Although there are many ways to define tugs in general, the most satisfying description is that they act as "floating motors" to move objects that have no power of their own (or have lost power) or that cannot maneuver adequately under their own power - such as large ocean-going ships that must squeeze into cramped docks. Tugboats and towboats started-off in the 1830s as motors to bring sailing vessels, including the legendary clipper ships, into port and dock.
