Walkathon 2012

The Annual Child School/Legacy High School Walk-a-thon held June 8, 2012 on the East Promenade is one of the favorite days of the year for students, teachers, and parents. The event, started in 2008, began as a way to teach the students to give back to the school in appreciation for all that the teachers do for them during the school year. This year they walked to raise money to replace the 2003 computers currently in the classroom. The whole school community of families, teachers, staff and students from kindergarten to high school seniors work together for a common goal. The beautiful view of along the promenade, the sunny day and community spirit made the day a success. It exemplifies the best of all that The Child School/Legacy High School stands for – a learning community coming together for education.

I happened upon this event while covering the Tour of California at the Ontario Convention Center on Saturday May 19, 2012. It is not to my usual Ballroom Dance Standards, but I enjoyed seeing the dancing and encouraged by how well these young kids were performing.

2012 Daddy Daughter Date Night

The Darlington Recreation Department staged its annual “Daddy/Daughter Date Night” on Feb. 9, where – after enjoying a meal and getting a keepsake portrait taken – girls ages 4 and older hit the floor and danced the night away with their favorite fellas: their dear old dads and granddads. This annual event is very well-attended, and ticket sales provide a great fundraising source for vital city recreation programs.

Oasis in Highland September 25, 2011

An Oasis in Highland

by Ricardo Tomboc

The Oasis Dance Studio in Highland, California specializes in the “art through movement”. More specific “Bellydancing”, using a style known as the American Tribal Style. Bellydance is a “Western” coined name for the Traditional Middle Eastern dance, sometimes referred to as Arabic dace in the West. Politti Ashcroft is a Certified AST Instructor & owner of the Oasis Studio.

On Sunday, September 25, “Inara” a Middle Eastern Dance Performer and Instructor; held an all day dance workshop at the Oasis Studio followed by a showcase performance involving students and instructors. The studio was filled with people who you would never suspect of having an interest in Bellydance. Several men wearing cowboy hats and some ladies in western attire. On one side of the studio the wall was lined with mirrors and the floors were wood, the room looks like your typical dance studio, except for the Middle Eastern décor.

There were several dancers performing for the spectators that night. Some ladies danced in tandem, while others soloed for the audience. The visual aspects of the dance were captivating and when combined with the rhythmic beats of the Eastern music played, it was like watching a field of bright colorful flowers swaying back-in-fourth in a mild wind against the blue colored wall of the studio. And just when you thought the dance was flowing in a particular direction and was going to end; the flow changes and the rhythm take you in a different direction. With each beat of the music the dance was choreographed in such a way that each body movement, shake, shimmy, and flow of the hands could almost be anticipated with the sound of the music.

Who were these some of these local cancers? Hasseenah Myers, an employee with the City of San Bernardino, Parks and Recreation has partner danced with Politti the owner of the studio for over four years. Angelica Ordonez also an employee with the same City had been Bellydancing for over eight years. Inara the promoter of the workshop and lead instructor is a resident of Highland, California.

The Oasis Dance Studio is located at 3673 Highland Ave., Highland, CA. They offer class sessions and private lessons!

Highland YMCA New Year’s Eve Ballroom Dance, Dec 31, 2010

Highland YMCA New Year’s Eve Ballroom Dance
by Ricardo Tomboc

The Highland YMCA had its third annual New Year’s Eve Ballroom Dance. An estimated one hundred and eighty people attended the dance, which catered to ballroom dancers from all over the Inland Empire and beyond! Rob Hinderer is the new Director for the YMCA, and has been at his new post for a week and a-half. Overall, Rob Hinderer has been with the YMCA for over seven years in various capacities. Allen Newman Member of the Board of Directors introduced Rob to the group of ballroom dancers. Allen and Rob assisted in the raffling off of several donated gifts. Proceeds from the dance and raffle will help with camps and scholarships to the YMCA!

The dance was a semi-formal evening event, which was alcohol and smoke free as well! Music was provided by Sal Soriano of All-Time 1 MB DJ Services. Dancers come with and without partners. Several dance mixers allowed the dances to meet and dance with each other. Yes, you must be able to perform the basic dance steps to participate and enjoy the event; however, many none dancers attended to watch and enjoy the night.

Harry and Jackie Higashi, residences of Highland, CA attended the dance for their third year in a row. Both Harry and Jackie have danced for over 15 years, and their skill and grace on the dance floor was impressive and masterful. Harry is 83 years old and is retired military in the 70’s, and also has a second retirement after working 20 years with the City of San Bernardino. Jackie is 82 years young and came for Japan! There are many places to learn to ballroom dance in the IE, including the Highland Senior Center, which offers free dancing lessons to the community every Tuesday night and is available to people of all ages!

Allen Newman and Rob Hinderer both stated that they would like to host the dance again next year.
