Cartago - Cartago Province, Costa Rica

The City of Cartago is located in the Cartago Province at the base of the Irazú Volcano ... 22 kilometers from the capital of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Although technically considered to be in the Central Valley area, the trip over to Cartago from the San Jose 'central valley' requires travel into the adjoining Cartago valley

During our trip to Cartago we traveled up through the mountains to an elevation of 7,628 feet (2,325 meters) for the great views of both the San Jose and Cartago valleys some 3,000 feet below.

We then returned via the main valley roadways, completing a full circle to our home near Vasquez de Coronado (Northeast of San Jose).

Our travels included stops at the Parroquia of Santiago Apóstol "ruins" that date back past the 16th century and the Básilica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles originally built in 1639.

The Básilica is the destination of an annual August pilgrimage and visitation by about 1.5 million believers throughout the country - many of whom join in the celebrated 22 kilometer walk to the basilica during the Romería. Some even complete their entire journey on their hands and knees as a demonstration of their piety.

As you’ll see in the following pictures, Junior and I took care of some much overdue business (please don't take offense, we were just kidding around with a fun photo opportunity ;o)

Playas de la Guanacaste - Pacific North

As part of our Costa Rica Guanacaste adventure; Kara, Junior and I drove West from our home in the Central Valley to Golfo de Nicoya then up and around the gulf via the Puente de la Amistad de Costa Rica-Taiwan bridge.

We continued West through Guanacaste to Playa Flamigo then further North up to Playa Azucar where the cliffs gave us really great views of the secluded beaches down below.

After a beautiful Pacific sunset on Playa Brasilito, we had dinner at a beach restaurant
then a nice evening poolside at the Hotel Conchal - just South of Playa Flamingo.

The next morning we then headed out to Playa Conchal which is only accessible by walking or driving on Playa Brasillito - following the shoreline South to a what appears to be the end of the beach. We parked the car and walked over the hill to a cove that is Playa Conchal where the actual beach consists of sea shells instead of sand. It was REALLY cool ...
we had never seen anything like it!

Junior and Kara hunted for starfish and other live marine life on the beach rocks. Then it was time to get back to the hotel where we showered and headed out for a two hour inland drive through Liberia to Parque Nacional Volcán Rincón de la Vieja.

Muebles Alpes - Costa Rica Custom Furniture

Costa Rica furniture prices are considered expensive due to the fact that a
majority is imported and heavily taxed. After extensive research in
setting up my own Costa Rica home, I decided on Costa Rica manufactured custom
furniture based on its overall better quality and price.

It turned out that my neighbor's cousin manufactures hardwood maple furniture, retails the furniture in his own stores and wholesales the furniture to other area independent and chain stores (ie: all Grupo M's namesakes: Importadora Monge, El Gallo más Gallo and El Verdugo). The cousin went over my list and made detailed offers of items and prices that easily beat all other sources. All furniture was custom ordered where I was able to pick; designs, sizes, finishes, fabrics, etc.

factory where Costa Rica furniture is still made the old fashioned way ... from
log to finished product.

La Feria de la Costa Rica

Weekends in Costa Rica means it's time for "La Feria" or the farmer's market.

In most larger towns, local farmers are provided a central area to set-up stands
and sell their products.

You can't get fresher food and the cost savings over store prices definitely
make the crowds worth navigating.

Junior and I took a short day trip to INBioparque in
Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica.

INBioparque is an Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad de
Costa Rica interactive theme park designed to teach visitors about Costa Rica's unique biological diversity.
The park consists of many, many beautiful trails exhibiting native plant life,
insects, butterflies, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals - many walking or flying
freely within the park.

If you find yourself in the San Jose, Costa Rica area and have a half day ... INBioparque is a close, inexpensive and fun experience.
