Last ~2000ft is basically rock climbing - very steep ascents/descents. Hiking in Maine is classified in 4 categories (5'th is rock climbing with harness): 1 - easy (not much of elevation gain and terrain is easy); 2 - difficult (several thousand feet of elevation gain and rocky terrain); 3 - very difficult (very steep climbs on very large boulders); 4 - excruciatingly difficult (more dangerous than category 3, inaccessible in bad weather, may require harness et al.) Most trails that climb to Mt.Katahdin are level 3; one of them is level 4.
