__2013 Int'l Small Scale Steamup Diamondhead Temp (copy)

Updated 02-03-2013.
The 20th International Small Scale Steamup, Diamondhead 2013, was again held at the Diamond Resort in Diamondhead, Mississippi between January 13-20, 2013.

Our host, Jerry Reshew initiated the steamups back in 1993. Other than 2006 when the aftermath of Hurricane Karina spoiled the show, Diamondhead has been a constant and welcoming respite from our everyday lives. This winter weekend event has now grown to a full week with 24 hour a day track time. There were three newly built separate elevated dual track layouts, with steaming bays that accommodated both 45mm and 32mm locomotives and rolling stock. At the center of each layout and along the perimeters were areas for viewing, tables for servicing, display areas, and fellowship.

Special events included four seminars (“Lubrication” by Jerry Reshew, "The Cab Forward Locomotive" by Alan Redeker, and "A trip to the Austrian Railroad Museum" by Peter & Carol Jobusch), The Flea Market, the Drawbar Pull, Battery Powered locos, the Exhibit Hall, Thursday’s catered lunch, and Saturday Movie Night.

One cannot talk about the Gulf Coast without mentioning their world famous cuisine. Evening meals at the Darwell's Cafe, the Shed, and breakfast at the Waffle House were memorable occasions.

Updated 01-22-2013. When I first became involved with live steam locomotives I met many new friends and was having trouble remembering who was who. I decided to take photos of my new friends and put them on my cell phone with names attached. I’ve kept doing that and now have more than 200 photos. I’ve shown these photos to many live steamers and several have suggested that I put the photos on this photo site so others can identify us by name. So here they are. If for any reason you want your photo removed, just eMail me, the link is at the bottom of this window. If you want your photo added, ask me at any event where I have my camera with me or send me a digital photo by eMail and I will add you to the gallery. Thank you to Carol Jobusch for sharing her 2003 yearbook photos for this album.

2012 February SoCal Steamup with Eric Strauss

The February 2012 SoCal steamup was hosted at Eric Strauss’ residence in Sherman Oaks, California. Eric’s railroad is a raised dual loop system built upon a structure made of 2"x 6" wooden frames which are bolted together and supported on 4" x 4" posts. This raised framework in turn supports the track platform made of 5/16" thick Hardipanel concrete composite board. Although the entire line is nearly dead level, because of sloping terrain, the height of the railroad above grade varies from about 26" to 46". The earth in the area is very hard because of a very high clay content so the support posts do not go into the ground but instead are strap-mounted to precast concrete footers simply resting on a thin sand layer at ground level. The track is Llagas Creek nickel silver code 250 rail in their "narrow gauge" tie strips. Altogether, there are fourteen #6 turnouts including the three crossovers and six "yard" tracks for steaming up with lengths from 16 ft. to over 26 ft. The outside loop is 186 ft. long with a minimum radius of 8 ft. The inside loop is about 181 ft. long with a minimum radius of 7 ft.- 4". Access to the inside (running) area is provided by a hinged, counter-balanced, 4 ft. lift-bridge with it's closed (down) position magnetically held. Photos by Rick Parker

2012 Int'l Small Scale Steamup Diamondhead

Updated 02-17-12.
The 19th International Small Scale Steamup, Diamondhead 2012, was again held at the Diamond Resort in Diamondhead, Mississippi between January 15-22, 2012. There were 163 attendees from 31 states and 3 international locations (Canada, Great Britain, and West Indies). Some traveled by air, others by car, and a couple of us kept the faith and traveled by rail.

At the center of each layout and along the perimeters were areas for viewing, tables for servicing, display areas, and fellowship.

Special events included four seminars (“Hank Povee's NORRIS” by John Riley, "Logging Steam" by Jerry Reshew, "A South African Train Adventure" by Jim Gabelich, and "Building the Adelaide & Lakeview RR Steeple Cab Locomotive" by Sonny Wizelman), The Flea Market, a concert by the Clack Valves and Cornets Steam Band, the Drawbar Pull, Wind-Up locos, the Exhibit Hall, Friday’s catered lunch, and Saturday Night Movies.

One cannot talk about the Gulf Coast without mentioning their world famous cuisine. Evening meals at the Jourdan River Steamer, the Shed, and breakfast at the Waffle House were memorable occasions.

Unfortunately I came down with the flu (or food poisoning) and missed most of the steamup although I was able to take a few photos including those displayed here.

2011 National Summer Steamup Sacramento

Updated 10-04-2011. The 2011 National Summer Steamup was the 16th year for this event and had 129 steamers attend including 5 from Canada. In addition to the steamers an additional 100 plus people came as guests. These are spouses, children and anyone interested in seeing what the steam up is like.

This year the Steam Events team provides 3 large tracks with 7 loops. Two loops were dual gauge 45 and 32 mm and 5 were 45 mm. In addition, there was another smaller track with 2 additional 45 mm loops. Therefore, everyone had enough track time.

Saturday night featured a BBQ out on the patio. The weather was warm but not hot and everyone stayed to talk and enjoy the fellowship after dinner. We followed the BBQ with our door prize drawing. 2011 was the National Summer Steamup’s 9th year at the Lions Gate Hotel. The venue fits everyone’s needs with a large, well lit, air conditioned room in which to run the trains. In the same building we have the dealer room and a room for the seminars. The building is free standing and not directly connected to the hotel so we do not bother anyone and no one bothers us. Next year's 18th National Summer Steamup will be held from Wed. July 18, 2012, starting at 6 pm until Sunday July 22 at noon at the Lions Gate Hotel. We hope you will make plans to attend.
California State RR Museum Railtown 1897

California State RR Museum Railtown 1897 is in California’s gold country, and is home to the historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse of the Sierra Railway. Railtown has been the location of many western movies that involved steam trains. The first known filming was in 1919, for a silent movie called "The Red Glove." Railtown 1897 and the historic locomotives and railroad cars preserved here have appeared in more than 200 films, television productions, and commercials. Still a popular Hollywood location site, Railtown 1897 has been called "the most photographed railroad in the world." The California State Railroad Museum located in Old Sacramento, assumed responsibility for Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jul 1992.
