Kilauea Point Lighthouse, Kauai

Kilauea Point Lighthouse (Kauai, Hawaii). Work on the 52-foot tower began in August of 1912 and the second-order, bivalve, Fresnel lens and clockworks were manufactured in France at a cost of $12,000. The revolving lens produced a double flash every ten seconds that was visible up to a distance of twenty-one nautical miles and was first illuminated on May 1, 1913. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Kilauea Point Lighthouse was darkened for the duration of World War II. In 1974 during the Coast Guard's Lighthouse Automation and Modernization Program (LAMP), problems developed with the mercury flotation system and the light’s rotation mechanism was permanently disabled. In 1976, with the revolving lens now crippled, a modern rotating beacon was installed on a 10-foot pole seaward of the tower. Kilauea Point and its lighthouse became part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, when it was established in 1985. Taken June 17, 2013 (Image G1-01_068a)

Europa Point Lighthouse on Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a British possession at the northeastern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, which joins the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is dominated by the famous Rock of Gibraltar which stands almost 1400 ft tall. The Europa Lighthouse was built between 1838 and 1841 and was fully automated in February 1994. Biloxi Mississippi Lighthouse

The cast iron Biloxi lighthouse was constructed in 1848 and is the only lighthouse in the United States to stand in the middle of a four lane highway. During a storm in 1860, a portion of the sand under the lighthouse eroded away, causing the structure to lean. Later more sand was removed from the opposite side to correct this. Local authorities ordered the light be extinguished on June 18, 1861. The light was repaired and returned to service by November 15, 1866. The lighthouse withstood many hurricanes but was damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina with restoration being completed in February 2010. Taken January 22, 2011 (Image 5D-16_639a)

Chicago Harbor Southeast Guidewall Light

Chicago Harbor Southeast Guidewall Lighthouse. Constructed in 1938 at the end of Chicago Harbor�s southeast guidewall, this small lighthouse helps to guide vessels into the lock system at the head of the Chicago River. Taken June 18, 1009 (Image 5D-02_117a)

Chicago Breakwater Lighthouse

Chicago Breakwater Lighthouse. In 1917 renovation of the Chicago breakwater included relocation of the 1893 river mouth lighthouse tower onto the breakwater. Along with the lighthouse two attached structures on opposite sides of the tower we added, a fog signal building on one side and a boathouse on the other side. By virtue of its location atop the concrete breakwater, the lens now boasted a focal plane of eight-two feet. The light was fully automated in 1979 and today still exhibits its prize winning Third Order Fresnel lens. Taken June 18, 1009 (Image 5D-02_113a)
